2013 International Student Summer Camp – Beijing

I welcome you to Term 3 from Beijing. Fifteen Year 9, five Year 10 students, Ms Ho and myself departed Australia last week to attend the 2013 International Student Summer Camp in Beijing. The International Student Summer Camp has been held for the past three years. This is the second time Central Coast Grammar School has attended. The organisers include:

  • Beijing Municipal Education Commission
  • Beijing International Education Exchange

This camp is primarily for International middle school students and their teachers from around the world. This year there are 780 students and 70 teachers participating.

The activities of the Summer Camp include:

  • The Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Lizie Cross from Year 10 had the honour of giving the welcoming address to the official delegates, staff and students from around the world. She did herself, her family and School very proud.
  • Night of Chinese Arts
  • Night of Chinese Sports
  • Night of International Friendship
  • Visiting and Sightseeing: Imperial Palace, The Great Wall, Summer Palace, Hutongs, Wangfujing Street and Silk Market, and watch a Kong Fu Show.
  • Chinese Courses: Chinese Language courses, Calligraphy, Chinese Ink, Wash Painting, Beijing Opera Facial Masks, Martial Art, Handicraft Paper-Cut and braiding Chinese knots etc.

The highlight to date for Ms Ho and I is seeing our students mix so competently with students from all nationalities. It is indeed a pleasure to witness our students shine in this environment. Diverse languages have no barriers for friendship amongst children. Adults from around the world could learn much from children about getting along with each other in a harmonious manner.

Students from CCGS who are attending the 2013 International Student Summer Camp in Beijing: Ken Arnot, Anna Beatson, Will Bishop, Lizie Cross, Millie-Rose Green, Scott Haseler, Beycan Irmako, Tom Jenkins, Callie Kavanagh, Yeji Kim, Federica Lannan, Oliver Loewenthal, Elliot Meadows-Batagol, Lauren Nicholson, Katie Norton, Tom Robson, Dana Tieman, Matthew Webb, Phoebe Whitfield and Jeremy Williamsz.

Year 9 2014 Elective Choice Information Evening

Please be aware this evening is for those students (and parents) who are unsure of what elective courses to study during Year 9 2014. Year 10 2014 students and parents are also most welcome to attend. If students are clear about their pattern of study for Years 9 and 10, it may not be necessary for them to attend. The evening will commence at 7:00pm sharp and conclude by 8:30pm.

Year 8 students should have received a letter about the Elective Choice Information Evening with their Academic School Report last term. The Year 9 2014 Curriculum Book is available in the download section on our School Portal. The book contains information about all mandatory courses and the elective courses offered, for study. Parents and students should find this a useful resource. Please remind your child to enter their Year 9 elective choices online by midnight Thursday 8th August and return the signed paper copy to the Middle School Office no later than Friday 9th August 2013.

Middle School Assembly

Middle School Assemblies are held each Wednesday fortnight in Week A. These assemblies commence at 8:50am in the PAC. I would like to remind parents you are always most welcome to attend. Students are the Masters of Ceremonies and perform at these assemblies. Students are acknowledged in front of their peers for an array of achievements.

Academic Outcomes

Term 3 is a critical phase of the year for academic outcomes. It is a time to make up any lost ground from the earlier part of the year or to consolidate on a positive start. Either way it requires a high level of focus on the various tasks – with a well-planned approach to academic work. Parents and students are requested to stay in close contact with Middle School House Coordinators and classroom teachers.
