Fathers & Children’s Camp

Last Saturday I visited Point Wolstoncroft at Lake Macquarie to find that despite the wild and rainy weather the children and their fathers were entrenched in having fun and sharing in some great activities.   Congratulations to the Fathers & Children's group who did a splendid job of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of everyone who participated.  This was a special time for dads to bond with their children.

Year 12 Student Achievements

Each week in the ‘Student News’ section we showcase numerous achievements by students right across the school in such a diverse range of areas from academic, sporting, debating, public speaking, drama, community service and leadership.

This week I am proud to be able to advise that three of our Year 12 students have been given special mention from external organisations.

Ruben Fela and Anna Clare-McAtamney have been selected for inclusion in ARTEXPRESS 2014, which showcases the very finest HSC Visual Artworks.  This is indeed an honour to be selected for this prestigious exhibition.  It is rare indeed for a school to have two such selections in a year.  Congratulations to the students and the Year 12 Art Teachers, Mr Graeme Lowe and Mrs Sandra Peebles.

Ruben’s artwork “The Land of Plenty” will go on display at The Armory Sydney Olympic Park, Maitland Regional Art Gallery and Bathurst Regional Art Gallery.

Anna-Clare’s works will go on display at Maitland Regional Art Gallery, Margaret Whitlam Galleries and University of Western Sydney.

Anna-Clare McAtamney has also achieved 1st place in the Schools division of the Coasties Film Festival that was held at Avoca Beach last weekend.  This year the festival was judged by Don McAlpine – Cinematographer for Getting of Wisdom, Breaker Morant, Romeo and Juliet, Moulin Rouge, X-men and Mrs Doubtfire amongst others.  Well done Anna on this fantastic achievement.

Daniel Callaghan has been nominated for consideration for inclusion in the InTech 2014 Annual Exhibition of outstanding Major Design Projects from the 2013 HSC Industrial Technology course.   This is great news for Daniel and he has also been selected to receive a major prize in the 2013 NSW Year 12 Industrial Technology Competition run by Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences at Wollongong University.  Congratulations also to Daniel’s teacher Bil Kensey who has a long history of supporting Year 12 students to achieve excellence and display work in the HSC exhibitions.

Expressions of Thanks

One of the most amazing things about Central Coast Grammar School is the sense of community.  This is always apparent at school functions, at the Fathers & Children’s Camp, P&F activities and is one of the characteristics which many people say makes CCGS a very special place indeed.

When families are experiencing difficulties, illness and the loss of a loved one is really when this school community shines and comes together to support those in need.  Recently I was contacted by David McQueen, husband of Donna who recently passed away after a long illness.  David expressed huge appreciation for the support that members of the community have afforded Donna and their sons Angus and Scott over a long period of time during Donna’s illness and at the funeral and farewell.  David made a very telling comment – he indicated that he was overwhelmed by the support and had realised that so many people had done so many things in different ways, often without the knowledge of anyone in the family.  He asked that I pass on the thanks of his family to the whole school community for their love and support.

Earlier this year I received a letter from a parent, Kelly Corlett, who experienced a serious illness over the past couple of years and who thankfully is now much better.  Kelly also indicated how supported her whole family felt by the care and assistance provided by members of the community in so many different ways.   Kelly made very similar comments to David McQueen in saying that the support from parents, school staff and the considerate manner of students was of invaluable support to their family as they dealt with Kelly’s illness.

On behalf of the school, the McQueen and Corlett families and many other families who have received support or assistance of some kind during 2013 please be assured that your love and care is very much appreciated.

Staff News

Congratulations to Mrs Allyson McNally and her husband Paul on the birth of baby Michael James born on Tuesday 26 November.   Mum and baby are doing very well and Allyson and Paul are very proud parents.

Congratulations also to Damon Cooper on the award of a Non-Government Schools Superannuation Scholarship Award for 2013.   Last week Ms Jorjet Issavi, NGS Super Client Relationship Manager, visited the school to present Damon with his People’s Choice Category Award.   Thank you to staff, students and parents who voted online for Mr Cooper.  He is most appreciative.  It is an honour not only for Mr Cooper but for the school to have a teacher win such a prestigious award.   Mr Cooper will travel next year to Harvard University to attend a two week course related to teaching and learning.

House Celebration Day – Friday 6 December 2013

Next Friday 6 December the whole school will celebrate the efforts and achievements that have taken place in each House throughout the year.  While Nicholii as the winning House will enjoy some special privileges by travelling to Hoyts Erina to watch a movie, all other Houses (Acacia, Grevillea and Ironbark) will participate in a range of activities appropriate to House Celebration Day here at school.

The first two periods and Recess will be as for a normal Friday, and all students will need to bring their books, equipment and a snack for Recess.

Students are expected to wear the correct PE uniform (shorts or skirt, House T-shirt, white socks, predominantly white joggers).  This is a privilege which is reviewed each year.  It is very important that each student wears his/her sunhat and brings suitable sunscreen protection.  School tracksuits may be worn if the weather is inclement.   Recess will be followed by House Celebration time, a House luncheon and activities.  A barbeque lunch will be provided for all students, but students will be asked to bring in any extras required.  This will be advised by individual House Coordinators.

Speech Night 2013

Only two weeks to go before Speech Night which is being held in the RLC at 5.30pm on Wednesday 11 December.  As in previous years, selected year groups are asked to attend Speech Night on a compulsory basis regardless of whether or not they receive a prize.  In 2013 Years 6, 9 and 11 are required to attend.  A roll call check for Years 6, 9 and 11 will be conducted at the RLC and students will be informed of the exact location closer to the time.   The students are then asked to take a seat with their parents to watch Speech Night proceedings, unless they are prize winners, where reserved seats have been arranged.

This year’s guest speaker is Major Lisa Weston (nee Piper) who graduated from CCGS in 1997.  Lisa is an Intelligence Officer in the Australian Army who was awarded Australia Day honours this year. I am sure Lisa will deliver an inspirational address on Speech Night for students, staff and visitors alike.

Red Cross Fundraiser – Ten Tunes for Typhoons

Last week’s special service drew more than just awareness for the staff and students at CCGS about the devastating effects the typhoon had caused residents of the Philippines.  It also raised awareness of the need to support those in need in times of crisis.    Members of our school community are so generous when called upon to dig deep, and that is exactly what they did last week.   We raised $1,455.75 for Red Cross – which is an outstanding effort on everyone’s behalf considering Ms Forsyth and the Year 10 students only had one week to organise the event.

Congratulations to all those who participated from the Junior School Concert Band and guitar ensembles through to individual performances from Scarlett Lennon, Daniella Szakacs, Aaron Carey, Nick Geddes, Anabelle Keaney, the Year 11 Boys Band, Kiersten Nyman, Senior Stage Band and who could forget the special rendition of the Banana Dance performed by Mr Horsley and the House Coordinators.

Artech Showcase

On Thursday 5December the Visual Arts and Technology Departments will be showcasing this year’s works and achievements.  The Artech Showcase, held in the A.W. Elliott Centre, gives students from all years K-12 the opportunity to exhibit their work.  Viewing of the Artech Showcase will commence at 5.00pm.  Senior school students who have achieved excellence in their subject areas will be acknowledged with certificates and prizes on the night commencing at 6.30pm.  All recipients of prizes must wear full school uniform.

Student Voices

With an absolutely amazing 127 story nominations submitted for our Student Voices 'Stories of Inspiration', we would like to congratulate Skye Norton in Year 5 for her story submission which will be our premiere film! Thanks to everyone for their entries, we are looking forward to getting back in touch very soon with the winner of the next story – stay tuned!

The end of lease laptop return day for year 6 and year 9 students is Monday the 9th December 2013. Please ensure students bring their laptop, laptop charger and laptop bag to school on this day.
