Debating News

Congratulations to Abigail Winyard, Holly Turnor and William Penny on their win against St Joseph’s College on Wednesday evening.

Valda Wieland ResizedIt was a close debate, however, our team, according to the adjudicator, had the better logic and a stronger team line. Round Five takes place in Week Two, 25 July.

The Novice team will debate the affirmative against St Joseph’s with the topic That we should ban sports that involve animals (such as horse and greyhound racing).

The Juniors will argue the negative against St Joseph’s That we should not fund elite sporting institutions, and the Seniors will have an impromptu topic (given an hour before the debate) where they will argue the negative case against NASHS.

Students and parents are invited to attend. Please email valda.wieland@gsg.wa.edu.au for more information.

Speech and Debating National Championships

Have you got what it takes?

Students in Years Nine to Eleven are eligible to try out for the GSG team in this year’s Australian Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships (AIDPSC) being hosted by Moreton Bay Boys’ College in Brisbane from Monday 24 September to Wednesday 26 September 2018.

Students compete in four events:

  • Debate;
  • Prepared Speech: After Dinner Speech or Persuasive;
  • Impromptu Speaking; and
  • Interpretative Reading

This year’s AIDPSC will be used to select the Australian contingent to represent the country and their school at World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships (WIDPSC) held in 2019, hosted by Branksome Hall Toronto, Canada.

Interested students, please email your interest to Ms Wieland by Friday 20 July and see me or email for further details and information before that time.

GSG has attended this national competition since 2010. Some of you may remember that former Head Girl, Katie McAllister, attended and was selected to join the Australian team which travelled to Durban, South Africa in 2013.

Competition is tough and the commitment significant. Talk to your parents about this opportunity and decide if it might be something for you!  I look forward to hearing from interested students soon!

From the Communications Captain

Hello everyone! I trust you’ve had an enjoyable week.

This Friday, the Year Twelve students participated in House Singing. This is an annual event where the graduating students from each House choreograph and perform a compilation of songs. The winning team receives points that go towards the House Shield.

Good luck to all students, teachers and coaches heading to Perth for Country Week next week. Thank you to all the amazing coaches who take time away from their families to go to Perth with the school. We all appreciate it greatly.

Good luck to the Year Ten students heading to Work Experience next week. There is a vast range of jobs and industries that the students are going into, from Dome to Bunnings to local primary schools. We really hope you enjoy the experience and learn a bit about what you would like to do upon leaving school.

Thank you and enjoy the holidays.

There is a slight change to the 715 school bus service, following requests from parents to service Houghton Blvd in Oyster Harbour Estate.

Here is a copy of the flyer the driver is passing on to all students who board the service.
