Max Shearwood and Sam Alder, both of Year 12 and Douglas Weller of Year 11 had their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards approved by the state office recently. All three boys have achieved at a high level in five categories to complete the Award. The categories include:  physical recreation, learning a skill, and volunteering every week over a minimum period of twelve months, at least two adventurous journeys and a residential project. The boys will be invited to attend a ceremony at Government House to receive their award presented by Professor Marie Bashir, Governor of NSW. Only a small number of students achieve the award at this level and our warmest congratulations are extended to the boys.

Year 10 Reports

Year 10 reports are being finalised and students and their parents should take this opportunity to reflect on the teachers’ summations, guidance and in many cases, praise! This is a great time to reflect but also plan for the New Year. I hope students will embrace their teachers’ advice and perhaps put in some extra reading and/or practice time during the holidays to prepare or consolidate. Reports are expected to be posted in the next few days.

On Thursday of this week, Year 10 students will attend two financial literacy workshops conducted by Brian Musgrave from the Commonwealth Bank Foundation, “Startsmart”. The workshops will cover earning, saving, spending and investing topics relevant to the age of the students. We encourage parents to discuss the workshops after Thursday with their child to further their understanding of financial matters. There is no cost for these workshops.

Year 12 – 2014

The School For Excellence (TSFX) are once again running Summer School programs, which are designed to provide students with the best possible head start in a highly effective, time efficient and relatively painless manner!

During the course of these programs, students will work through subject materials to an A+ standard in advance of school and hear vital tips regarding assessments and HSC survival skills. Each lecture will thoroughly review and then extend on the materials covered in Term 4 of 2013. In addition to these helpful strategies, students will also receive comprehensive notes that include all the relevant theory, fully worked examples, take home questions as well as advance exposure to exam style questions and analytical/problem solving strategies so as to maximise assessment and examination results.

Summer School is running between Monday 6th January and Friday 24th January, 2014 at the University of Sydney. Most major subjects and electives are being offered, including a special lecture on ‘Advanced Essay Writing Skills’ which may prove valuable for many students who have found the finer points of this necessary writing skill difficult to master. Brochures with further details can be obtained from Senior College Reception or online at www.tsfx.com.au.

Smartraveller advice to Year 12 Schoolies

As we know many of our students look forward to some travel when they complete their exams. Safety is the major concern. To assist young people considering travelling overseas after their end of year examinations, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has launched a ‘Schoolies & Leavers’ page which can be accessed through their web site www.smartraveller.gov.au . From the main page go to ‘information for young travellers’ then ‘Schoolies/Leavers’.

New Course to help manage HSC

Some students find it helpful to seek help through outside agencies and to perhaps hear a different viewpoint. Over the past year we have engaged speakers for Year 11 students to speak about topics ranging from motivation and relaxation to memory and to maximizing marks. A new local group has been brought to my attention should students want to revisit these aspects as they come closer to the HSC.

Axiom – Psychological and coaching services offers one such course. “This course is “designed for senior high school students starting their HSC journey” For more information call 4324 5400 or visit www.axiompsych.com.au.
